Meekyoung Shin

Employing soap as a material, the artist recreates various cultural artifacts, ranging from Ancient Greek and Roman statues to vases and Buddha statues from Asia. Removed from their specific cultural background and recontextualized into artworks, these 'translated' works suggest, as its primary attribute, the incompleteness of translation and representation, connecting to the characteristics of soap which gets 'worn down'. Her work creates points of contact between the past and present, exploring the boundaries between nature and art, East and West. Majoring in sculpture in university, Meekyoung Shin had numerous solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at SeMA, Arko Museum, Space* C., Keramic MuseumPrincessehof in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, Barakat London in Lodon, UK, Wooyang Museum of Contemporary Art, MMCA, Seoul National University Museum, Sungkok Art Museum, Mongin Art Centre, Kukje Gallery, Space K, Hakgojae Gallery in Shanghai, China, Haunch of Venison, London, Belton House, The National Centre for Craft, Design, and Bristol Museum, and in international art exhibitions such as Nanjing Triennale in 2008, Venice Biennale Special Exhibition in 2011, as well as multiple art fairs, including Art Basel in 2008, Shin was nominated for the Korean Artist Prize in 2013 by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and received the Prudential Eye Award for 'Best Emerging Artist in Sculpture' in Singapore, in 2015. 작가는 그동안 비누를 이용하여 그리스와 로마의 조각상을 비롯해 아시아의 도자기 및 불상에 이르기까지 다양한 문화적 생산물들을 재현해왔다. 그리고 그 특정한 문화적 배경들이 탈각되고 예술적 실천으로 재맥락화한 ‘번역’된 예술품들이 갖는 함의를 비누의 속성인 ‘닳고 마모되는’ 양상과 연결 지어 번역과 재현의 불완전성을 작업의 주요 특징 중 하나로 제시해 왔다. 과거와 현재 사이의 접점, 자연과 예술, 동양과 서양의 경계들, 사이에서 작업을 한다. 대학에서 조소를 전공한 신미경은 그동안 서울시립 북서울미술관, 스페이스 C, 프린세스호프 국립도자박물관(리우와덴, 네덜란드), 바라캇 런던(런던, 영국), 우양미술관, 국립현대미술관, 성곡미술관, 몽인아트센터, 국제갤러리, 코오롱스페이스K에서 개인전을 개최한 바 있으며, 중국 상하이의 학고재갤러리, 영국 런던의 헌치오브베니슨갤러리(Haunch of Venison, London), 벨톤하우스(Belton House), 브리스톨시박물관(Bristol Museum)에서의 개인전 및 대영박물관에서 진행한 다수의 프로젝트에 참여하였다. 또한 2008 난징트리엔날레, 2011 베니스비엔날레 특별전 등의 비엔날레를 비롯하여 2008 바젤아트페어 등 다수의 아트페어에 참여했다. 주요 수상 경력으로는 2013년 국립현대미술관 주최의 '올해의 작가상' 4인에 선정되었으며, 2015년 싱가포르 푸르덴셜아이어워즈(Prudential Eye Awards) '베스트 신진 조각가상'을 받은바 있다.
